An out and back ride with a moderate climb up Afton Road to the top of the west mesa.
From La Mesa, head south on NM 28 for about 2 miles to the intersection with NM 189. Turn right (south) at the stop sign to continue on NM 28 to Afton Road which be about 2 miles past the NM 28 & 189 intersection. Turn right on Afton Road and follow it for 11 miles to the end of the pavement just past the power plant. Turn around there and trace your route back.
The ride departs and returns to La Mesa, NM, a small farming community about twenty miles north of El Paso on NM Highway 28. Please park in the Severino's Restaurant parking lot away from the restaurant building (across from Eagle Grocery).
Great Mexican food awaits you at Severino's and Chope's (across NM 28). The only restroom facilities and water are at the beginning and end of the ride, plan accordingly.
